With South Africa being such a geographically large, and culturally diverse country, each main city possesses very unique traits, not just in terms of attractions on offer, cuisine types and lifestyle, but also in it’s very ‘essence’

Durban is a very special place. While it’s difficult to capture the true essence in words, or even with images, there are some unique things that we love about Durban that you won’t find anywhere else.

Lingo

Don’t be surprised if you overhear the odd phrase or conversation that doesn’t make much sense. There’s a unique lingo that locals use. Here’s some popular examples:-

Choon – talk

Shot – thanks

Ou – nice person

What’s in a name

Why is Durban called Durban? Durban was founded in 1835 on the site of Port Natal and was named for Sir Benjamin D’Urban, the governor of the Cape Colony. Now you know!

Curry and surf

These are the first things that come to mind when we think about our beautiful city. The warm Indian Ocean, beautiful beaches and perfect waves make this the ultimate surf destination. With the largest Indian community outside of India (fact!), Durban is the very best place to enjoy authentic curries – and a must-try is the famous bunny-chow, eaten with the hands and not with cutlery (unless you want an ‘ou’ to ‘choon’ you!)

Constant holiday feeling

It could be the climate which offers an almost ‘endless summer’, or it could be the lifestyle, which offers a more relaxed pace than the other main cities in South Africa, but here in Durban you will definitely feel like you’re on holiday, even if you’re here for business. The locals are exceptionally laid-back, friendly and eager to help. Enjoy our warm welcome!

The most beautiful sunrises

With our East Coast location, an uninterrupted sunrise view is easy to find. If you’re an early-riser, you’re in for an insta-worthy treat, and if not, then we recommend you set your alarm at least once to enjoy watching the sun come up.

Over and above this, Durban is known to offer great value for money, so make this your next travel stop. You won’t be sorry!
